Softball Preview: Mercer Mustangs vs. Laurel Spartans

The Mercer Mustangs will look to defend their home field on Saturday against the Laurel Spartans at 1:00 p.m. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.

Mercer is headed into the contest fresh off scoring the most runs they have all season. Everything went their way against Sharpsville on Thursday as Mercer made off with a 17-3 win. The victory was familiar territory for Mercer who now have three in a row.

Angelina Eakman spent all five innings played on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned (and one unearned) runs on four hits and racked up eight Ks. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than seven strikeouts every time she's pitched this season.

At the plate, Lexie Walker was incredible, scoring three runs and stealing a base while going 4-for-4. Another player making a difference was Lily Erwin, who scored four runs and stole two bases while going 2-for-3.

Meanwhile, while Laurel put up plenty of runs on Wednesday, the same can't be said for Freedom Area. Laurel blew past Freedom Area 22-0. That 22 run margin sets a new team best for Laurel this season.

Mercer's win bumped their record up to 8-2. As for Laurel, the victory made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 5-2.
