Softball Recap: Bernards Triumphs

Bernards was handed a seven-run defeat in their previous outing, but that didn't affect their clutch gene on Tuesday. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 7-5 win over the Bound Brook Crusaders. This was a revenge game for the Mountaineers: when they faced off against the Crusaders back in April, they had to take a 4-1 loss.

Kelly Zoilkowski spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered four earned (and one unearned) runs on ten hits and racked up 12 Ks. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in six consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Bernards got a big performance out of Brooke Helpinstill, who went 3-for-4 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double. Corrine Perry also deserves some recognition as she got her first hit of the season.

The victory got Bernards back to even at 7-7. As for Bound Brook, they dropped their record down to 9-12 with the defeat, which was their fourth straight at home.

Looking ahead, Bernards will host Somerville at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. As for Bound Brook, they will venture away from home to challenge Delaware Valley at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday.
