The Rio Hondo Bobcats will venture away from home to challenge the Los Fresnos Falcons at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
It was a proper cat-fight when Rio Hondo challenged La Feria on Tuesday. Rio Hondo came up short against La Feria, falling 8-2. The Bobcats haven't had much luck with the Lions recently, as the team has come up short the last nine times they've met.
Danielle Rocha was cooking despite her team's loss, going 2-for-4 with one triple and one run. Rebekah Zuniga also deserves some recognition as she brought in her first RBI of the season.
Meanwhile, Los Fresnos made easy work of Port Isabel on Tuesday and carried off a 17-7 victory. The result was nothing new for the Falcons, who have now won five games by ten runs or more so far this season.
Jocelyne Arriaga and Viviana Gomez were a major factor while hitting and pitching. Throwing, Arriaga struck out seven batters over 4.2 innings while giving up four earned (and three unearned) runs off three hits. Meanwhile, Gomez tossed 1.1 innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. The dominant performance also gave her a new career-low in walks (zero). At bat, Arriaga scored two runs and stole a base while getting on base in four of her five plate appearances, while Gomez scored a run and stole a base while going 1-for-2. That's the most runs Arriaga has posted over her last 12 matchups.
In other batting news, Jadelynn Cortez was a standout: she scored four runs and stole Five bases. while going 2-for-3. The dominant performance gave her a new career-high in stolen bases. Another player making a difference was Alexis Perez, who went 2-for-4 with one home run, two runs, and two RBI.
Los Fresnos was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .562. That's the best batting average they've posted all season.
The win made it two in a row for Los Fresnos and bumps their season record up to 8-6-1. A key ingredient in that success has been their performance when it comes to hits: they averaged an imposing 13 hits in those games compared to only 5.46 in the others. As for Rio Hondo, their loss dropped their record down to 2-5.
Friday's contest will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Rio Hondo hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .355. However, it's not like Los Fresnos struggles in that department as they've averaged .339. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Rio Hondo came out on top in a nail-biter against Los Fresnos in their previous matchup back in March of 2024, sneaking past 5-4. The rematch might be a little tougher for Rio Hondo since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
