Basketball Recap: Winfield Picks Up Sixth Straight Win on the Road

Winfield put another one in the bag on Tuesday to keep their perfect season alive. They came out on top in a nail-biter against the Marion County Red Raiders, sneaking past 60-57. The victory almost wasn't to be: the Pirates were down 36-18 in the second quarter.

Leading Winfield to victory were Sean Wyers and Slate Gilbert. Wyers dropped a double-double on 25 points and ten rebounds, while Gilbert posted 19 points along with eight rebounds and four steals. The matchup was Gilbert's third in a row with at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Garret Beasley, who had five points.

Several Red Raiders players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Ty Hollis, who put up nine points in addition to eight assists and three steals. Hollis is on a roll when it comes to steals, as he's now grabbed three or more in the last five games he's played. Another player making a difference was Tye Madison, who went 7 of 17 on his way to 18 points in addition to five boards and three blocks.

Winfield's win was their sixth straight on the road dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 3-0. As for Marion County, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 3-5.

Winfield wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next game, a 61-59 defeat against Red Bay on the 5th. As for Marion County, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 71-52 victory against Cordova on the 5th.
