Basketball Recap: Jayla Ayler's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Greenbrier over South Effingham

Greenbrier extended their losing streak to five on Friday, dropping them down to 3-5. They were three points away from ending the streak, but they lost a 39-36 heartbreaker at the hands of the South Effingham Mustangs. The game marked the Wolfpack's lowest-scoring contest so far this season.

Greenbrier's defeat came despite a true team effort with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Jayla Ayler, who posted 12 points and five rebounds. Ayler is also crushing it when it comes to steals: she's grabbed at least two every time she's taken the court this season. Another player making a difference was Kiara Papillion, who had two points along with six assists and four steals.

As for South Effingham, the win was the seventh in a row for them, bringing their record up to 8-1. Those victories came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 54.7 points over those games.

Hayden Johanson produced another solid performance dropping a double-double with 18 points and ten boards. With that strong performance, she is now averaging an impressive 8.1 rebounds per game. Kailyn Chapman was another key player, putting up 11 points.

Greenbrier wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next matchup, a 59-44 loss against Grovetown on the 6th. As for South Effingham, they have also already played their next game, a 66-26 win against Effingham County on the 6th.
