Softball Game Preview: Cathedral Fighting Irish vs. McCutcheon Mavericks

Cathedral is a perfect 5-0 against McCutcheon since April of 2016 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Wednesday. The Fighting Irish will host the Mavericks at 5:30 p.m. Cathedral knows how to get runs on the board -- the team has finished with ten runs or more in their past five games -- so hopefully McCutcheon likes a good challenge.

On Monday, Cathedral made easy work of Indianapolis Bishop Chatard and carried off a 14-1 win. Considering the Fighting Irish have won 12 contests by more than five runs this season, Monday's blowout was nothing new.

Meanwhile, it may have taken eight innings to finish the job, but McCutcheon ultimately got the result they hoped for on Tuesday. They came out on top against Kankakee Valley by a score of 5-2.

Makenzie Grimes spent all eight innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned runs on five hits and racked up nine Ks.

On the hitting side, Addison Gillespie was excellent, going 1-for-4 with one home run and three RBI. That's the most RBI she has posted since back in April. The team also got some help courtesy of Ashtyn Strimel, who got on base in all four of her plate appearances with two runs.

Cathedral is on a roll lately: they've won eight of their last nine matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 18-4-1 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.9 runs on average over those games. As for McCutcheon, their win bumped their record up to 11-7.

Cathedral skirted past McCutcheon 3-2 when the teams last played back in May of 2025. Will the Fighting Irish repeat their success, or do the Mavericks have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
