Baseball Recap: North Central Takes a Loss

If North Central was riding high fresh off their 9-1 takedown of Toledo Christian on Saturday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Eagles fell just short of the Antwerp Archers by a score of 7-6 on Monday. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Eagles of the 6-4 loss they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in April of 2024.

Jackson Poynter was huge while hitting and pitching even without the win. On the mound, he struck out six batters over 6.2 innings while giving up three earned (and four unearned) runs off seven hits. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than two walks in four consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with one triple, one stolen base, and one run. That stolen base marked the first that he has snagged this season.

In other batting news, Gavin Shockley and Tyler Meyers stepped up to the plate in a big way. Shockley went 1-for-4 with one stolen base, one run, and one double, while Meyers went 1-for-3 with two stolen bases and two runs. Brody Taylor was another key player, going a perfect 2-for-2 with one stolen base and one RBI.

North Central's record now sits at 6-9. As for Antwerp, their win ended a six-game drought at home and bumped them up to 5-10.

Looking ahead, North Central will host Gorham Fayette at 4:15 p.m. on Tuesday. Gorham Fayette has struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 15.3 runs per game on average), something North Central will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for Antwerp, they are taking a road trip to challenge Montpelier at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The Archers' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Locomotives have averaged an impressive 9.1 runs per game this season.
