While Will Grier has spent his career playing at the small school level, there's no doubting that he has big-time talent.

Headed to Florida on a scholarship, and also named the first team all-state quarterback in North Carolina by the Associated Press, the Davidson Day (N.C.) quarterback concluded his career as one of the most prolific passers in high school history. At the same time, Grier led his team to three straight championships in the North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association. As a result, Grier is the MaxPreps Small Schools Player of the Year and he heads the Small Schools All-American Team.

Grier beats out a pair of very worthy candidates for player of the year honors in Arkeel Newsome of Ansonia (Conn.) and Travis Quintanilla of Refugio (Texas). Newsome became just the ninth player in history to rush for more than 10,000 yards in a career, finishing with 3,867. His 187 career touchdowns rank third all-time. Newsome also helped lead Ansonia to three straight Class S state championships, and was previously featured in the Beyond the X series.

Quintanilla, meanwhile, set Texas state records for touchdown passes in a career (178) and season (68) and yards in a season (5,420) and a career (13,335).

Grier put up huge numbers in his three seasons as quarterback at Davidson Day. Besides throwing for 4,989 yards and a state record 77 touchdowns, he also finished high on the all-time list in several career categories. His 14,565 career passing yards rank fourth in high school history while his 195 career touchdowns rank second all-time.

Terry Hessbrook of Ithaca (Mich.) is the Small Schools Coach of the Year. Hessbrook's Yellow Jacket squad has won four straight state championships, three at the Division 6 level and one at Division 5. His team has also won 56 straight games, which is tied for the longest active win streak in the nation for 11-man teams.

The MaxPreps Small Schools All-American Team is comprised of 60 players who were members of teams that played in state enrollment divisions that are generally less than 1,000 students.
