Basketball Recap: Battle Mountain Comes Up Short

Battle Mountain has been a dominant force so far, but they're in the middle of a mini-slump at the moment. They had to suffer through a 49-21 loss at the hands of the North Tahoe Lakers. The loss was a bit of a surprise, as the Longhorns came into the game with a sizable advantage in MaxPreps' basketball rankings in their respective home states (they are ranked 21st in Nevada, while the Lakers are ranked 92nd in California).

Battle Mountain lost on Friday despite a true team effort on offense, the best among them being Paitynn Johns, who posted six points and seven rebounds.

Laura Couwenhoven had an outrageously good game for North Tahoe as she went 8 of 12 on her way to 21 points and five rebounds. Couwenhoven continues to improve, besting her previous point total in each of the last three games she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Natalie Rios Quezada, who had six points.

Battle Mountain's defeat was their first in the league, dropping their league record down to 2-1 and their overall record down to 7-2. As for North Tahoe, the victory made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 2-6.

Battle Mountain didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 47-10 win against Incline on the 21st. As for North Tahoe, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next match, a 41-39 victory against West Wendover on the 21st.
