Basketball Recap: Genoa-Hugo/Karval Pirates vs. Briggsdale Falcons
Genoa-Hugo/Karval was not able to break out of their rough patch on Saturday as the team picked up their eighth straight loss dating back to last season. They took a 61-43 bruising from the Briggsdale Falcons. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Pirates of the 34-30 defeat they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in December of 2024.
Despite the loss, Genoa-Hugo/Karval saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Ryker Lockhart went 6-for-13 on his way to 14 points along with six rebounds and five steals. Tayler Thelen was another key player, putting up three points and five boards.
Briggsdale got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Jeremiah Sparks out in front who shot 57% from the field to rack up 16 points in addition to five rebounds and three steals. Those 16 points gave Sparks a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Scot Francis, who posted eight points along with 11 boards and seven assists.
Genoa-Hugo/Karval's defeat dropped their record down to 0-2. As for Briggsdale, the victory got them back to even at 1-1.
Genoa-Hugo/Karval didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, a 40-30 loss against Arickaree on the 11th. As for Briggsdale, they will host Hi-Plains at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday.
