Basketball Game Preview: Springport Spartans vs. Concord Yellowjackets

Springport is on a six-game streak of home wins, while Concord is on a three-game streak of away wins: one of those streaks is about to end. The Springport Spartans will host the Concord Yellowjackets at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Springport knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with 55 points or more in their past three matchups -- so hopefully Concord likes a good challenge.

Springport will bounce into Tuesday's contest after beating Bronson, who they had gone 2-7 against in their nine prior meetings. Springport strolled past Bronson with points to spare on Thursday, taking the game 60-45.

Springport can attribute much of their success to Jake Kregel, who went 7 of 10 on his way to 21 points along with five boards and four steals, and Brody Baum, who dropped a double-double on 16 points and 16 rebounds. Kregel's evening made it three games in a row in which he has scored at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Marshall Shoemaker, who posted seven points.

Springport smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 16 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least nine offensive boards in eight consecutive games.

Meanwhile, Concord came up short against Stockbridge on Thursday and fell 38-31. While losing is never fun, the Yellowjackets can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Michigan basketball rankings (they are ranked 345th, while the Panthers are ranked 169th).

Concord has been struggling recently as they've lost four of their last five matches, which put a noticeable dent in their 6-6 record this season. As for Springport, their win bumped their record up to 7-1.

Springport couldn't quite finish off Concord in their previous matchup back in February of 2024 and fell 50-48. Can Springport avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
