Football Preview: South Spartans vs. North Stars
On Friday South will have to hit the road after three straight games at home. It'll be Northside v. Southside when their and the North Stars meet at 7:30 p.m. South knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with 31 points or more in their past five matchups -- so hopefully North likes a good challenge.
Last Friday, South humbled Mira Monte with a 35-6 victory. The result was nothing new for the Spartans, who have now won four games by 20 points or more so far this season.
Anthwone Jones was a one-man wrecking crew for South as he picked up 125 receiving yards and a touchdown, and also rushed for 55 yards and a touchdown. That's the most rushing yards Jones has posted since back in October of 2023. Josh Encinas was another key player, throwing for 171 yards and a touchdown on perfect 5-for-5 passing.
Perhaps unsurprisingly given the score, South was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 276 rushing yards. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Mira Monte only rushed for 152.
Meanwhile, North came into Friday's contest having lost four straight, but that streak is now in the rearview. They walked away with a 14-6 win over East Bakersfield on Friday.
North relied on the efforts of Justin Lewis, who rushed for 109 yards, and Bradley Dockery, who rushed for 52 yards and two touchdowns. North is 2-1 when Dockery posts two or more rushing touchdowns, but 1-4 otherwise.
South's victory was their fourth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 7-1. As for North, their win ended a three-game drought on the road and puts them at 3-5.
Friday's match might be decided in the on the ground. South has been unstoppable on the ground this season, having averaged 201.8 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like North struggles in that department as they've been averaging 182.8. It's looking like Friday's matchup might have some serious battles in the trenches.
