Baseball Game Preview: Centennial Hawks vs. Mayfield Trojans

The Centennial Hawks will square off against the Mayfield Trojans at 7:00 p.m. on Monday. The two teams each escaped (but just barely!) with wins against their previous opponents.

On Wednesday, Centennial needed a bit of extra time to put away Alamogordo. They won by a run and slipped past the Tigers 4-3. The win was familiar territory for the Hawks, who have now won five matches in a row.

Jonah Martinez looked comfortable as he pitched 1.1 innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. The dominant performance also gave him a new career-high in strikeouts (four).

On the hitting side, Johnny Renteria was excellent, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 2-for-2.

Meanwhile, Mayfield hadn't done well against Las Cruces recently (they were 1-8 in their previous nine matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Thursday. The Trojans came out on top against the Bulldawgs by a score of 2-1 (the very same score they lost by in their prior game). For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Trojans have posted against the Bulldawgs since March 29, 2023.

Centennial's win was their fifth straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 10-4. Those home victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 14.6 runs over those games. As for Mayfield, their win was their first in the district, bumping their district record up to 1-2 and their overall record up to 6-7-1.

Centennial came up short against Mayfield in their previous meeting back in April of 2024, falling 5-2. Can the Hawks avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
