Preview: Coconino Panthers vs. Mingus Marauders
Coconino is 9-1 against Mingus since December of 2018, and they'll have a chance to extend that success on Thursday. The Coconino Panthers on the road again and play against the Mingus Marauders at 7:00 p.m. on January 18th. Given that both teams suffered a loss in their last game, they both have a little extra motivation heading into this game.
Last Tuesday, Coconino came up short against Flagstaff and fell 58-49.
Despite their defeat, Coconino saw several players rise to the challenge and make noteworthy plays. Oryon Huayhualla, who scored 14 points along with seven rebounds, was perhaps the best of all. The team also got some help courtesy of Michael Minter, who scored nine points.
Meanwhile, Mingus' recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Tuesday after their fourth straight loss. They lost to Prescott at home by a decisive 59-44 margin. The defeat unfortunately continues a disappointing trend for Mingus in their matchups with Prescott: they've now lost nine in a row.
Coconino's defeat dropped their record down to 8-11. As for Mingus, they have been struggling recently, as they've lost nine of their last 12 contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 7-12 record this season.
Everything went Coconino's way against Mingus when the teams last played back in December of 2023 as Coconino made off with a 66-46 win. The rematch might be a little tougher for Coconino since the team won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
