Softball Game Preview: Topsail Pirates vs. South Brunswick Cougars

The Topsail Pirates will head out to face off against the South Brunswick Cougars at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Given that the two teams suffered a loss in their last games, they both have a little extra motivation heading into this game.

Last Tuesday, Topsail didn't have quite enough to beat North Brunswick and fell 8-7. That's two games in a row now that the Pirates have lost by just one run.

Meanwhile, South Brunswick unfortunately witnessed the end of their 19-game winning streak dating back to last season on Monday. They fell just short of Scotland by a score of 3-1. The loss put an end to the Cougars' undefeated start to the season.

Kina Davis put in work while hitting and pitching. She struck out eight batters over six innings while giving up three earned runs off five hits (and not a single walk). She has been consistent : she hasn't given up more than one walk any time she's pitched this season. She was also big at the plate, going 1-for-3 with one home run.

This is the second loss in a row for Topsail and nudges their season record down to 3-2. Even worse, they were so close so many times: the losses came by an average of only one runs. As for South Brunswick, their defeat was their first of the season and makes their record 6-1.

Topsail couldn't quite finish off South Brunswick when the teams last played back in April of 2024 and fell 2-0. Can Topsail avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
