Football Recap: Penns Valley Area Drops Highest Score of Season Against Greater Johnstown + How To Watch

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Penns Valley Area). They came out on top in a nail-biter against the Greater Johnstown Trojans on Thursday, sneaking past 27-24.

Penns Valley Area got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Spencer Althouse out in front who picked up 78 receiving yards and one TD, and also punched in one touchdown on the ground. That's the most receiving yards Althouse has posted since back in August. Another passer making a difference was Carter Ironside, who threw for 240 yards and one TD.

Penns Valley Area didn't let much get past them through the air: they limited Greater Johnstown to a completion percentage of just 30%. The Rams weren't nearly as limited: they posted one of 54.8%.

When it comes to explaining why Greater Johnstown lost, don't look at Daniel Porter. Despite the final result, he threw for 165 yards and a pair of touchdowns, and also rushed for 109 yards on only 12 carries. The bulk of those rushing yards came from one huge play: a run that gained an incredible 60 yards. Greater Johnstown also got a significant boost from Cordell Porter, who ran away from the competition to the tune of 82 yards.

Penns Valley Area's first win this season bumped their record up to 1-7. As for Greater Johnstown, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 1-7.

Penns Valley Area and Greater Johnstown could both be facing uphill battles in their next games considering their disadvantage in the MaxPreps Pennsylvania Rankings. The Rams will face off against Huntingdon at 7:00 p.m. on the 17th with a big rank disadvantage (431 vs. 182). Meanwhile, Greater Johnstown (ranked 452nd) will meet Penn Cambria (ranked 120th) at 7:00 p.m. on the 17th.
