Preview: Bessemer Academy Rebels vs. Cornerstone Christian Chargers
Bessemer Academy is 4-0 against Cornerstone Christian since August of 2016, and they'll have a chance to extend that success on Thursday. The Bessemer Academy Rebels will look to defend their home field against the Cornerstone Christian Chargers at 7:00 p.m. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, the pair will really light up the scoreboard.
Last Friday, Bessemer Academy didn't have too much trouble with Valiant Cross Academy on the road as they won 31-12.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Bessemer Academy to victory, but perhaps none more so than Tyseon Smith, who rushed for 111 yards on only 12 carries, and also picked up 37 receiving yards. Another player making a difference was Luke Turner, who threw for 156 yards and three touchdowns.
Meanwhile, Cornerstone Christian put another one in the bag on Friday to keep their perfect season alive. They strolled past Evangel Christian Academy with points to spare, taking the game 52-34.
Zeke Adams was his usual excellent self, rushing for 255 yards and five touchdowns on only 15 carries, while also throwing for 141 yards and a touchdown on only 13 passes. Adams was no stranger to the big play, taking off on a dash that went for 65 yards. Drake Dunning was another key contributor, rushing for 55 yards and a touchdown.
Bessemer Academy's victory bumped their record up to 3-6. As for Cornerstone Christian, their victory was their ninth straight on the road, which bumped their overall record up to 9-0.
Thursday's game might be decided on the ground as these two are both standouts in the run game. Bessemer Academy has been excellent on the ground this season, having averaged 151.4 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Cornerstone Christian struggles in that department as they've been even better at 235.1 per game. It's looking like Thursday's game might have some serious battles in the trenches.
Bessemer Academy took their win against Cornerstone Christian in their previous meeting back in October of 2022 by a conclusive 34-8. Will Bessemer Academy repeat their success, or does Cornerstone Christian have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
