Soccer Game Preview: Derby vs. Maize

Derby hasn't had much luck against Maize recently, but that could start to change on Tuesday. The Panthers are taking a road trip to challenge the Eagles. Derby's defense has only allowed 0.5 goals per game this season, so Maize's offense will have their work cut out for them.

Derby is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Kansas' top teams: Eisenhower, who was ranked third at the time (Derby was ranked eighth). The Panthers fell just short of the Tigers by a score of 2-1 on Thursday. Having soared to a lofty eight goals in the game before, Derby couldn't push the score so high this time.

Meanwhile, after failing to score in their last contest, Maize made sure to put some goals up on the board against Newton on Thursday. They never let the Railroaders get on the board and left with a 6-0 win. The result was nothing new for Maize, who have now won six matches by three goals or more so far this season.

Having lost for the first time this season, Derby fell to 9-1. As for Maize, their victory bumped their record up to 6-2.

Derby suffered a grim 4-0 defeat to Maize in their previous matchup back in April of 2024. Can the Panthers avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
