Baseball Game Preview: Fernley Vaqueros vs. Churchill County Greenwave

Fernley is preparing for their first league matchup of the season on Friday. They will head out on the road to square off against the Churchill County Greenwave at 4:00 p.m. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, the two teams will really light up the scoreboard.

Last Saturday, Fernley beat South Tahoe 10-5. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Vaqueros.

Spencer Pryor and Riley McCullar did most of the damage at the plate: Pryor went 3-for-5 with three RBI, while McCullar scored two runs and stole Two bases. while going 2-for-4. The dominant performance gave Pryor a new career-high in hits.

Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Churchill County). They came out on top against Truckee by a score of 11-6 on Saturday. That's two games straight that the Greenwave have won by exactly five runs.

The team relied heavily on Anthony Gonzalez, who scored three runs and stole a base while going 4-for-5. He is becoming a predictor of Churchill County's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is undefeated (and 2-4-1 when he doesn't). The team also got some help courtesy of Chase Carnahan, who went 2-for-5 with one triple, two RBI, and one run.

Churchill County kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 14 hits. That's a new trend for them: they were averaging 5 hits per game earlier this season, but in their last 15 matchups they've averaged 9.4.

Churchill County has been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four games. That's provided a nice bump to their 5-4-1 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 7.0 runs over those games. Fernley's record now sits at 3-6-1.

Fernley might still be hurting after the 10-0 defeat they got from Churchill County in their previous meeting back in March of 2024. Can Fernley avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
