Softball Recap: Speedway Gets the Win

Speedway took a eight-run defeat the last time they faced off against Ben Davis, but this time they managed to keep it close and that made all the difference. The Sparkplugs sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 7-6 victory over the Giants on Monday. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Sparkplugs have posted since May 7, 2024.

Hayli Clampitt made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she struck out eight batters over seven innings while giving up three earned (and three unearned) runs off six hits. That's the most strikeouts she has posted since back in April. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-3 with one stolen base and one run.

In other batting news, Laney Jarrett was incredible, getting on base in three of her four plate appearances with three stolen bases and two runs. Another player making a difference was Betty Miller, who got on base in two of her four plate appearances with three stolen bases and one run.

The victory made it two in a row for Speedway and bumps their season record up to 5-7. Those wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered a grand total of 6 runs in those games. As for Ben Davis, they now have a losing record of 11-12.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Speedway will host Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The Sparkplugs' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Braves have averaged an impressive 6.2 runs per game this season. As for Ben Davis, they will be playing at home against Lawrence North at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
