Basketball Game Preview: Coon Rapids Cardinals vs. Elk River Elks

Coon Rapids and Elk River are an even 5-5 against one another since January of 2017, but not for long. The Coon Rapids Cardinals will square off against the Elk River Elks at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. Having both just faced considerable losses, both teams are looking to turn things around.

Last Tuesday, Coon Rapids was beaten by Totino-Grace 74-43. The matchup marked the Cardinals' lowest-scoring contest so far this season.

Meanwhile, Elk River took a blow against Champlin Park on Tuesday, falling 91-56. While losing is never fun, the Elks can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Minnesota basketball rankings (they are ranked 269th, while the Rebels are ranked 22nd).

Elk River's defeat dropped their record down to 2-6. As for Coon Rapids, their loss was their fifth straight on the road, which dropped their record down to 3-6.

Everything came up roses for Coon Rapids against Elk River when the teams last played back in January of 2024, as the team secured a 73-41 victory. The rematch might be a little tougher for Coon Rapids since the squad won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
