Softball Preview: Hammond Morton Governors vs. Griffith Panthers

The Hammond Morton Governors will head out on the road to face off against the Griffith Panthers at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Hammond Morton has three straight wins, Griffith has eight straight defeats), but none of that matters once you're on the field.

In what's become a running theme this season, Hammond Morton gave their fans yet another huge victory on Tuesday. They put the hurt on Hammond Academy of Science & Tech with a sharp 16-0 win.

Julissa Abeyta made a big impact while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she didn't allow a single earned run and only two hits while striking out 14 over five innings pitched. Abeyta has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than two walks in three consecutive pitching appearances. Abeyta was also solid in the batter's box, scoring two runs and stealing a base while getting on base in three of her four plate appearances.

Nevaeh Vargas made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and went 2-for-4 with three RBI, a triple, and a run. The team also got some help courtesy of Natalie Vianello, who scored a run while going 2-for-3.

Hammond Morton has been performing well recently as they've won four of their last five games, which provided a nice bump to their 8-5 record this season. As for Griffith, their loss dropped their record down to 3-10.
