Russell won the last time they faced Trego and things went their way on Friday too. The Russell Broncos strolled past the Trego Golden Eagles with points to spare, taking the game 48-30. Winning may never get old, but the Broncos sure are getting used to it with their sixth in a row.
Russell got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Kelvie Reeves out in front who dropped a double-double with 11 points and 12 steals. Russell is 7-2 when Reeves posts five or more steals, but 3-7 otherwise. Another player making a difference was Aubrey Birney, who dropped a double-double with 13 points and ten rebounds.
Russell smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 14 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least nine offensive rebounds in five consecutive matchups.
Despite the defeat, Trego saw an underclassman step up: freshman Leah Day posted eight points and nine boards. The dominant performance also gave Day a new career-high in blocks (two). Bailey Ziegler was another key player, putting up two points in addition to ten rebounds and seven blocks.
Russell now has a winning record of 10-9. As for Trego, they are on a four-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 5-12.
Looking ahead, Russell will head out on the road to challenge Hill City at 6:00 p.m. on February 21st. Russell is facing Hill City at the right time seeing as Hill City is stuck on a 17-game losing streak. As for Trego, they didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, a 67-26 loss against Quinter on the 17th.
