Baseball Game Preview: Honesdale Hornets vs. Mid Valley Spartans

The Honesdale Hornets will head out to take on the Mid Valley Spartans at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday.

Honesdale came into their game on Saturday off a hard-fought close win, but unfortunately suffered a serious change of fortune. They came up short against Lake-Lehman, falling 9-1.

Honesdale saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Nick Martin, who went 1-for-2 with one double and one RBI.

Meanwhile, Mid Valley hadn't done well against Riverside recently (they were 2-7 in their previous nine matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Wednesday. The Spartans were the clear victors by a 12-6 margin over the Vikings. The Spartans might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won eight matches by six runs or more this season.

Lorenzo Hernandez was a major factor while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out six batters over 3.1 innings while giving up just one earned run off one hit (and not a single walk). He has been consistent: he hasn't given up more than two walks in six consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-4 with two stolen bases, two RBI, and one run. That's the most stolen bases he has posted since back in April of 2024.

In other batting news, Doug Pua was a standout: he went a perfect 4-for-4 with two runs, two RBI, and one double. Those four hits gave him a new career-high. Nick Mills was another key player, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with two runs, two RBI, and one double.

Mid Valley has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won seven of their last eight contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 9-2 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.6 runs on average over those games. As for Honesdale, they now have a losing record of 5-6.

Honesdale beat Mid Valley 5-0 in their previous meeting back in May of 2024. Do the Hornets have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Spartans turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
