Football Recap: Keziah Joplin and Jamere Knuckles Secure Win for Mingo Central

For whatever reason, it's the away team that's had the advantage when Mingo Central and Scott meet (four straight games heading into this one) and that held true again on Friday. The Miners' defense stepped up to hand the Skyhawks a 19-0 shutout. The 19-point effort marked the Miners' lowest-scoring matchup of the season, but in the end it didn't matter.

A big part of Mingo Central's victory came down to the chemistry between Jamere Knuckles and his top target Keziah Joplin. Knuckles threw for 179 yards and one TD on only 13 passes while Joplin picked up 65 receiving yards and one score. Joplin's longest reception was for an impressive 65 yards, which helps to explain his lofty yards per catch total. Jacob Maynard was in the mix as well, providing Mingo Central with one touchdown.

Mingo Central's defense made their presence known, laying out the QB four times. That dominant display was truly a team effort as four different players picked up one apiece. They received some extra help from Maynard, whose fumble return for a touchdown made for one of the most unforgettable moments.

Mingo Central's win was their fifth straight on the road dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 6-0. Those road victories came thanks in part to their defensive effort, having only surrendered 10.4 points on average over those games. As for Scott, their defeat dropped their record down to 1-3.

Coincidentally, Mingo Central and Scott will both be playing Logan the next time they take the field. The Skyhawks will head out to face the Wildcats at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, while the Miners will host them at 7:00 p.m. on the 17th.
