Basketball Recap: Elijah Mcilvain's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Scholars Guild Academy over Trinity Prep

If Scholars Guild Academy was riding high fresh off their 68-45 takedown of Providence Classical Christian last Thursday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Scholars Guild Academy Spartans fell 64-54 to the Trinity Prep Lions on Friday. The Spartans were not able to repeat the success they had when they faced the Lions earlier this season, when they won 70-63.

Scholars Guild Academy's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Elijah Mcilvain, who dropped a double-double on 12 points and 12 boards. Mcilvain is on a roll when it comes to rebounds, as he's now pulled down 11 or more in the last three games he's played. Another player making a difference was Nicholas Fagan, who went 6 for 13 on his way to 15 points and seven boards.

Even though they lost, Scholars Guild Academy smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 14 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 12 offensive boards in three consecutive games.

It was another big night for Beau Blocker, who almost dropped a double-double on 37 points and nine rebounds for Trinity Prep. That makes it three consecutive games in which Blocker has scored at least a third of Trinity Prep's points. Gerald Layne was another key player, going 5 of 10 en route to 11 points.

Scholars Guild Academy has been struggling recently as they've lost three of their last four matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 6-9 record this season. Those losses can't be blamed on the team's offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 59.0 points per game. As for Trinity Prep, their victory bumped their record up to 10-7.

Scholars Guild Academy wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next contest, an 82-55 defeat against Lanier Christian Academy on the 27th. Trinity Prep has also already played their next game, a 65-63 loss against Alleluia Community on the 25th.
