Peninsula Catholic is 0-9 against Cape Henry Collegiate since April of 2015 but things could change on Tuesday. The Knights will venture away from home to take on the Dolphins at 4:30 p.m. Both come into the contest bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
Peninsula Catholic will bounce into Tuesday's matchup after beating Norfolk Collegiate, who they had gone 1-7 against in their eight prior meetings. Austin Muth made a big impact no matter where he played. He struck out 14 batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off four hits. Those 14 strikeouts gave him a new career-high. He was also big at the plate, getting on base in three of his five plate appearances with two runs and two RBI.
In other batting news, Peninsula Catholic let Simon Payntar and Aidan Casey run wild. Payntar got on base in all five of his plate appearances with three runs, two doubles, and one stolen base, while Casey went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, two RBI, and one run. Payntar has become a key player for Peninsula Catholic: the team is undefeated when he posts at least two runs, but 0-9 otherwise. Garrett Robison was another key player, going 2-for-4 with two runs and one RBI.
Peninsula Catholic was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .400. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Norfolk Collegiate only posted a batting average of .208.
Meanwhile, Cape Henry Collegiate beat Cox 7-3 on Friday.
The team relied heavily on Harley Matela, who went 1-for-3 with three RBI, two runs, and one double.
Cape Henry Collegiate is on a roll lately: they've won seven of their last eight games. That's provided a nice bump to their 14-8 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 6.1 runs over those games. As for Peninsula Catholic, their record now sits at 4-9.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Tuesday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Peninsula Catholic has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 6.9 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Cape Henry Collegiate struggles in that department as they've been averaging 7.7 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Peninsula Catholic suffered a grim 27-0 defeat to Cape Henry Collegiate in their previous meeting back in April of 2024. Can the Knights avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
