Basketball Recap: Statesville Comes Up Short

If Statesville was feeling good fresh off their 85-65 takedown of West Iredell last Monday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Statesville Greyhounds had to suffer through a 76-49 loss at the hands of the North Lincoln Knights. The Greyhounds were in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 43-13.

Despite the defeat, Statesville saw an underclassman step up: freshman Paul Cauthen almost dropped a double-double with 17 points and nine boards. Cauthen is also on a roll when it comes to steals, as he's now grabbed two or more in each of the last seven games he's played. Another player making a difference was Ameiyon Jehahj Sherrill, who posted six points and nine rebounds.

Even though they lost, Statesville smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 11 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive boards in 12 consecutive matches.

It was another big night for Kellen Karr, who dropped a double-double with 18 points and 18 boards for North Lincoln. Nash Haney also deserves some recognition as he posted his first block of the season.

Statesville's loss dropped their record down to 15-10. As for North Lincoln, they are on a roll lately: they've won 17 of their last 18 contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 20-5 record this season.

Statesville does not have any more games scheduled as of now. As for North Lincoln, they will take on East Lincoln at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. One thing working in North Lincoln's favor is that they have posted at least 55 points in their last 24 games.
