Softball Game Preview: Ben Davis Giants vs. Cathedral Fighting Irish

Ben Davis is 1-8 against Cathedral since May of 2015 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Thursday. The Giants will square off against the Fighting Irish at 5:30 p.m. Ben Davis is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7 runs per game this season.

Ben Davis barely beat North Central the last time the pair played, but that sure wasn't the case this time around. The Giants were the clear victors by a 13-1 margin over the Panthers on Wednesday. The victory continues a trend for the Giants in their matchups with the Panthers: they've now won four in a row.

Riley Gilliland was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit while striking out 12 over five innings pitched. She has been consistent: she hasn't given up more than two walks in seven consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, getting on base in all four of her plate appearances with one home run. That home run was her first of the season.

In other batting news, Bailee Latimer was incredible, going 2-for-3 with one home run, three runs, and one stolen base. Another player making a difference was Mariana Lopez, who went 2-for-4 with four RBI, one stolen base, and one double.

Ben Davis lost a few balls and finished the game with two home runs. That's the most home runs they've posted since back in April of 2024.

Meanwhile, Cathedral strolled into their game on Wednesday with a perfect record and they left with the same. They came within a single run of losing the streak, but they secured a 3-2 W against McCutcheon.

Cathedral pushed their record up to 21-0 with the win, which was their ninth straight on the road. As for Ben Davis, they now have a winning record of 11-10.

Ben Davis might still be hurting after the 18-5 defeat they got from Cathedral in their previous meeting back in May of 2024. Can the Giants avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
