Football Recap: Mccutcheon Falls to Guerin Catholic in First Game of Season

McCutcheon unfortunately couldn't capitalize on their home-field advantage in their season opener. The match between the Mavericks and the Guerin Catholic Golden Eagles didn't end well, with the Mavericks falling 30-13. The loss continues a trend for the Mavericks in their meetings with the Golden Eagles: they've now lost seven in a row.

Tyler Brigham and Landon Vandergoltz certainly did their best on Friday to avoid the loss. Brigham rushed for 66 yards and one TD, while Vandergoltz rushed for 84 yards on only nine carries.

Don't try to pin the team's loss on the defense: they kept the trenches locked down and allowed a mere two yards per carry. While two picked up at least nine total tackles, Mak Leonard stood above the rest. He made nine total tackles (0.5 for loss) and defended one pass. McCutcheon didn't have any issues in that department, having averaged 6.2.

Quentin Klee was a one-man wrecking crew For Guerin Catholic. as he threw for 301 yards and three touchdowns while completing 72.7% of his passes. Their leading receiver Isaiah Lewis was Klee's top target yet again, picking up 83 receiving yards and one score.

McCutcheon wasted no time getting back out on the field and has already played their next contest, a 31-6 win against West Lafayette on the 29th. As for Guerin Catholic, they have also already played their next game, a 34-0 defeat against Pendleton Heights on the 29th.
