The Laurel Highlands Mustangs are taking a road trip to square off against the West Mifflin Titans at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. Laurel Highlands is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.1 runs per game this season.
Laurel Highlands fought the good fight in their extra-innings matchup against Belle Vernon on Wednesday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Leopards by a score of 7-6.
Payton Senge put in work no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out 13 batters over nine innings while giving up four earned (and three unearned) runs off ten hits (and only one walk). Senge was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with one home run.
In other batting news, Aubrey Speelman made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and went 1-for-4 with one home run and two RBI. Another player making a difference was Kayla Howell, who scored a run while going 1-for-4.
Meanwhile, West Mifflin waltzed into their contest on Wednesday with three straight wins... but they left with four. They put the hurt on Oakland Catholic with a sharp 13-4 win. The result was nothing new for the Titans, who have now won four games by six runs or more so far this season.
KALEIGH TATTERS was incredible, going a perfect 3-for-3 with two stolen bases, four RBI, and two runs. She has been hot recently, having posted at least one stolen base the last four times she's played. ADILEE SALOPEK was another key player, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 2-for-3.
West Mifflin kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 13 hits. That's the most hits they've posted since back in April of 2024.
West Mifflin's victory bumped their record up to 6-3. As for Laurel Highlands, their defeat was their first in the conference, dropping their conference record down to 2-1 and their overall record down to 3-4.
Friday's match will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Laurel Highlands hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .359. However, it's not like West Mifflin struggles in that department as they've averaged .322. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Laurel Highlands skirted past West Mifflin 4-3 in their previous matchup back in April of 2022. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Mustangs since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
