Basketball Recap: Madelynn Matelic's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Speedway over Beech Grove

After flying high against Crawfordsville last Saturday, Speedway came back down to earth. The Speedway Sparkplugs took a 41-37 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Beech Grove Hornets. The Sparkplugs were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Hornets apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in January of 2024.

Speedway's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Madelynn Matelic, who posted 13 points in addition to eight steals and six rebounds. Matelic has been hot, having posted three or more steals the last five times she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Macy DeLisle, who earned 14 points and six steals.

Beech Grove was led to victory by Mariyah Marshall and Layla Cranfill. Marshall scored seven points and four steals, while Cranfill put up six points and four steals. Mylee Boling was another key player, putting up seven points along with eight boards and three steals.

Speedway's defeat dropped their record down to 5-10. As for Beech Grove, the win got them back to even at 8-8.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Speedway will head out to square off against Sheridan at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday. One thing working in Sheridan's favor is that they have posted at least 55 points in their last 12 matches. As for Beech Grove, it'll be a Battle of the Bugs the Beech Grove Hornets take on the Morristown Yellow Jackets at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday.
