Softball Recap: Elyria Triumphs

After losing to Avon Lake the last time they met, Elyria decided to demonstrate that turnabout is fair play. The Pioneers sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 10-8 win over the Shoremen on Thursday. That's two games straight that the Pioneers have won by exactly two runs.

Braylee Beckham made a splash no matter where she played. She struck out eight batters over seven innings while giving up three earned (and five unearned) runs off seven hits (and only one walk). She has been consistent: she hasn't given up more than two walks in five consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 1-for-3 with two runs and one stolen base.

In other batting news, Hannah Quayle was excellent, going 2-for-4 with two RBI, one run, and one double. Another player making a difference was Janalynn Herbert, who went 2-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.

Elyria is on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 10-5 record this season. As for Avon Lake, they dropped their record down to 5-9 with the loss, which was their third straight at home.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Elyria will challenge St. Joseph Academy at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday. The Jaguars have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 12.2 runs per game on average), something the Pioneers will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for Avon Lake, they will face off against Olmsted Falls at 4:45 p.m. on Monday.
