Baseball Recap: Woodlan Takes a Loss

Woodlan had lost four straight at home, but on Thursday they dropped their record down to 7-10 to make it five. They fell 13-8 to the Bluffton Tigers. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Warriors of the 4-3 loss they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in April of 2024.

Drew Fleek stepped up to lead a balanced group of hitters: he got on base in three of his four plate appearances with two stolen bases, three runs, and one double. He has become a key player for Woodlan: the team is 3-1 when he posts at least two runs, but 4-9 otherwise. Another player making a difference was Oliver Adams, who went 2-for-4 with one home run and two RBI.

As for Bluffton, the victory was the third in a row for them, bringing their record up to 11-5. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.7 runs over those games.

On Bluffton's side, Abram Gehrett made a big impact no matter where he played. On the mound, he struck out six batters over 3.1 innings while giving up just one earned run off three hits. Gehrett has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in five consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going a perfect 1-for-1 with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI. Those two RBI gave him a new career-high.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Zane Betz, who went 1-for-2 with three runs and four RBI. Those three runs gave him a new career-high.

Looking ahead, Woodlan will be playing at home against DeKalb at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. As for Bluffton, they will take on Wapahani in a tournament on Saturday.
