Basketball Recap: Melbourne Takes a Loss

Melbourne suffered their biggest loss since February 5, 2024 on Tuesday. They came up short against the Bishop Moore Hornets, falling 68-45. The Bulldogs have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.

Despite the defeat, Melbourne saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Brianna Matthews dropped a double-double on 20 points and 12 boards. Matthews is on a roll when it comes to rebounds, as she's now pulled down nine or more in the last ten games she's played. Another player making a difference was Elena Neel, who posted nine points in addition to five boards and three steals.

Even though they lost, Melbourne smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with ten offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive boards in eight consecutive games.

Alex Wolsonovich was a one-woman wrecking crew for Bishop Moore as she went 7 of 15 on her way to 20 points along with six assists and four steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Janiah Batten, who scored six points in addition to ten rebounds and three steals.

Melbourne's loss dropped their record down to 12-12. As for Bishop Moore, they pushed their record up to 8-12 with the win, which was their fourth straight at home.

Melbourne will host Odyssey Charter School at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Melbourne is facing Odyssey Charter School at the right time seeing as Odyssey Charter School is stuck on an eight-game losing streak. As for Bishop Moore, they didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 52-50 defeat against Wekiva on the 29th.
