Softball Recap: Make It Seven in a Row for Champaign Central

Champaign Central waltzed into their match on Saturday with six straight wins... but they left with seven. They came out on top against the Springfield Senators by a score of 6-3. This was payback for the Maroons, who suffered a 10-2 loss the last time these two teams met.

Haley Helm was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out 13 batters over seven innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off seven hits (and only one walk). She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than seven strikeouts in eight consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with one stolen base and one double.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Molly Kloeppel, who went 2-for-4 with three RBI, two runs, and one triple.

Champaign Central's win was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 16-1. Those home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.0 run on average over those games. As for Springfield, their record is now 12-4.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Champaign Central will face off against Centennial at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Chargers have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 7.33 runs per game on average), something the Maroons will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for Springfield, they will take on Taylorville at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. The Senators are facing the Tornadoes at the right time seeing as the Tornadoes are stuck on a five-game losing streak.
