Softball Recap: Wickliffe Triumphs

Wickliffe proved they can win big last Monday (they won by 14) and on Monday they proved they can win the close ones too. They came out on top in a nail-biter against the Lake Catholic Cougars, sneaking past 3-1. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Blue Devils have posted since April 3rd.

Leigha Blazetic spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned run on two hits and racked up 17 Ks. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than seven strikeouts in 13 consecutive appearances.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Madelyne Prosuch, who went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases and one run. Those two stolen bases gave her a new career-high. Ava McGarry also deserves some recognition as she snagged her first stolen base of the season.

The victory got Wickliffe back to even at 7-7. As for Lake Catholic, they are on a 16-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 1-16.

Looking ahead, Wickliffe will host Independence at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Each of these teams will be fighting to keep a win streak alive as Wickliffe comes in on three and Independence on seven. As for Lake Catholic, they will head out to challenge Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
