Softball Game Preview: Buna Cougars vs. Kirbyville Wildcats

A feisty cat fight will be fought as Buna Cougars challenge Kirbyville Wildcats at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. Buna is coming into the contest on a three-game losing streak.

On Tuesday, Buna came up short against Anahuac and fell 6-2.

Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Kirbyville). Everything went their way against Warren on Tuesday as Kirbyville made off with a 22-0 victory. Considering the Wildcats have won seven matches by more than seven runs this season, Tuesday's blowout was nothing new.

Jacie Roden made a splash no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, pitching three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two hits in four consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, scoring a run and stealing Two bases. while going 1-for-2. Those two stolen bases gave her a new career-high.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Emilee Denz, who went a perfect 4-for-4 with three runs, four RBI, and one stolen base. That's the most runs she has posted since back in February. Another player making a difference was Sydney Wheeler, who scored three runs while going 3-for-3.

The win made it two in a row for Kirbyville and bumps their season record up to 14-6. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 0.0 runs on average over those games. As for Buna, their loss dropped their record down to 2-7.

Everything went Buna's way against Kirbyville when the teams last played back in March of 2024, as Buna made off with a 10-1 victory. The rematch might be a little tougher for Buna since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
