Baseball Game Preview: Newberg Tigers vs. Sherwood Bowmen

For the second straight game, Newberg will face off against Sherwood. The Tigers will head out on the road to face off against the Bowmen at 5:00 p.m. on Friday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (Newberg 4.1, Sherwood 3.4) so any runs scored will be well earned.

Newberg is headed into the contest having just suffered their biggest defeat since April 26, 2024 on Wednesday. They lost 9-1 to Sherwood. The Tigers have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.

For Sherwood's part, Alex Lopez spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered only one earned run on three hits and racked up eight Ks. Lopez has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in three consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Landon Brown, who went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI. Those two stolen bases gave him a new career-high. Connor Parry also deserves some recognition as he hit his first triple of the season.

Sherwood hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. The team has now struck out at least five batters in four consecutive matches.

Sherwood is on a roll lately: they've won eight of their last nine games. That's provided a nice bump to their 14-3 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.9 runs on average over those games. As for Newberg, their loss dropped their record down to 11-7.

The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Friday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Newberg has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 6.8 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Sherwood struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 8.5 strikeouts.
