Basketball Recap: Lyah Powell's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Sherwood over Warsaw

Sherwood was not able to break out of their rough patch on Friday as the team picked up their eighth straight defeat. They lost 63-42 to the Warsaw Wildcats. The Marksmen were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Wildcats apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in February of 2024.

Sherwood lost despite a true team effort on offense. The best among them was Lyah Powell, who posted six points and six rebounds. That's the most points she has posted since back in December of 2024. Another player making a difference was Kiah Felton, who had 12 points and three steals.

Warsaw's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Kiera Mostaffa led the charge by putting up 12 points in addition to eight boards and six steals. Mostaffa has become a key player for Warsaw: the team is 5-1 when she posts at least five steals, but 9-10 otherwise. Tanna Howe was another key player, going 7-for-16 to rack up 18 points along with six rebounds and five steals.

Sherwood's defeat dropped their record down to 7-18. As for Warsaw, their win was their first in the district, bumping their district record up to 1-4 and their overall record up to 14-11.

Sherwood wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next matchup, a 41-40 loss against Holden on the 25th. As for Warsaw, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 45-30 victory against Windsor on the 25th.
