Baseball Recap: Wyoming Valley West Comes Up Short

Wyoming Valley West extended their losing streak to four on Monday, dropping their season record down to 6-7 in the process. They were two runs away from ending the streak, but they lost a 3-1 heartbreaker at the hands of the Crestwood Comets. Give some credit to the fans of both teams: the last five times they've met, the home team has come away the winner.

Gunner Giza was a force to be reckoned with on the mound despite the final result: he struck out seven batters over five innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off four hits.

At the plate, Wyoming Valley West saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Tyler Ruddy, who went 1-for-3 with one RBI. John Richards also deserves some recognition as he got his first hit of the season.

As for Crestwood, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 5-5. That said, the team wasn't facing the toughest opposition over that stretch, as it included 1-9 Berwick and 6-7 Wyoming Valley West.

On Crestwood's side, the team relied heavily on Caleb McManus, who got on base in two of his three plate appearances with two stolen bases and two runs. Those two stolen bases gave McManus a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Josh Mylet, who went 2-for-3 with one run and one double.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Wyoming Valley West will host Berwick at 3:15 p.m. on Wednesday. The Bulldogs have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 8.73 runs per game on average), something the Spartans will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for Crestwood, they will be playing at home against Pittston at 4:15 p.m. on Wednesday. The Patriots will roll in looking for their 13th straight victory, something the Comets surely won't give up without a fight.
