Recap: Key West Conchs vs. Mater Lakes Academy Bears
This season hasn't been kind to the Key West Conchs, who are still winless after their 15th match. They were dealt a 77-39 loss at the hands of Mater Lakes Academy on Tuesday. While losing is never fun, Key West can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Florida basketball rankings (they are ranked 563rd, while the Bears are ranked 159th).
Leading Mater Lakes Academy to victory were Maykayla Berrios and Vanessa Vancott. Berrios scored 19 points along with four steals, while Vancott scored 22 points along with seven rebounds. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Berrios has scored all season. Another player making a difference was Z'miah Moss, who scored ten points.
Key West's loss was their 15th straight on the road dating back to last season, which dropped their record down to 0-15. Those losses could be blamed on the team's offensive performance across that stretch, as they only averaged 28.3 points per game. As for Mater Lakes Academy, they now have a winning record of 11-10.
Key West will be staying on the road on Monday to face off against the Raiders on February 5th. As for Mater Lakes Academy, they won't have much time to rest: their next contest is against the at 5:00 p.m. on January 31st. Hopefully Lourdes Academy focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 14 last Monday.
