Basketball Recap: Salem Hills Takes a Loss

Salem Hills was the 78-73 winner over Cedar Valley when they last played one another back in February of 2024, but their luck changed this time around. The Salem Hills Skyhawks took an 86-73 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Cedar Valley Aviators on Friday. The Skyhawks' defeat continues a trend for the squad, making it three in a row.

Despite the loss, Salem Hills still got an impressive performance from Jacoby Gustin, who went 16-for-20 on his way to 34 points. What's more, Gustin also posted a 80% shooting accuracy, which is the highest he's achieved since back in November of 2024. Another player making a difference was Grant Hardy, who went 6-for-8 en route to 16 points and six assists.

Cedar Valley's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Owen Bawden led the charge by almost dropping a double-double with 24 points and nine boards. Bawden is becoming a predictor of Cedar Valley's success: when he posts at least 15 points the team is 5-1 (and 3-14 when he doesn't). The team also got some help courtesy of James Milligan, who went 6-for-10 to rack up 16 points and four steals.

Salem Hills' loss dropped their record down to 8-15. As for Cedar Valley, their record now sits at an identical 8-15.
