League recap: Hico extends winning streak with victory over Italy

Adding to the longest winning streak in 1A-1 Region II District 5 this week, Hico beat Italy 47-13. The victory was the sixth in a row for the Tigers.

Santo moved up to 656 from 825 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in the league. The Wildcats climbed the ranks as a result of topping Petrolia 55-12.

San Saba's offense was tough to stop this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. Kelan Verette threw for 80 and 1 touchdown and Cosme Diaz had 64 yards receiving. On the ground T. J. Hibler contributed 35 yards. Garrett Welch helped San Saba's passing attack out by catching 1 ball for 17 yards.

Hibler was the most successful running back in the league this week. In 10 carries, he ran for 35 yards as the Armadillos lost to Thorndale. Teammate Jesse Franco added to the ground attack by rushing for 13 yards.

San Saba's offense cannot be tamed this season and the Armadillos feature the season leaders in passing, rushing and receiving yards. Verette has thrown for 323 yards and 2 touchdowns this season, while Diaz has 11 catches for 231 yards. Verette also leads the league in rushing with 98 yards.

Two of the top teams in the league will go toe-to-toe this week when San Saba takes on Santo. Jeff Pannell's team's offense has recorded 64 points this season, making them No. 1 in the league, while Randy Thornton's team has permitted only 67 on the year.

An important game coming up in the league this week will be when Goldthwaite takes on Hico. As it stands, the Eagles are in fifth, while Keith Wood's team is in first.

De Leon took down Texas Wind 55-0 last week, the largest margin of any game.
