Basketball Recap: Mary Helen Mendheim Leads a Balanced Attack to Beat Slocomb

Houston Academy won the last time they faced Slocomb and things went their way on Tuesday too. The Houston Academy Raiders snuck past the Slocomb Red Tops with a 40-36 victory. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Raiders.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Houston Academy to victory, but perhaps none more so than Mary Helen Mendheim, who dropped a double-double on 13 points and 20 boards. Mendheim has been hot, having posted eight or more rebounds the last six times she's played. Another player making a difference was Belle Wilkison, who dropped a double-double on 11 points and ten boards.

Houston Academy smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 18 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 11 offensive boards in four consecutive matchups.

Houston Academy's win was their first in the region, bumping their region record up to 1-2 and their overall record up to 7-5. As for Slocomb, they have been struggling recently as they've lost ten of their last 11 contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 5-12 record this season.

Coincidentally, the two teams will both be playing Northside Methodist Academy the next time they take the court. Slocomb will host Northside Methodist Academy at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, while Houston Academy will head out to face them at 5:30 p.m. on Friday.
