Softball Game Preview: Aldine Mustangs vs. Nimitz Cougars

Aldine hasn't had much luck against Nimitz recently, but that could start to change on Friday. The Aldine Mustangs will take on the Nimitz Cougars at 6:00 p.m. Both teams took a loss in their last game, so they'll have plenty of motivation to get the 'W'.

Aldine is headed into Friday's match looking for a big change in momentum after dropping their eighth straight game on Thursday. They took a 9-4 hit to the loss column at the hands of Alief Elsik.

Ashley Ruiz made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and went a perfect 1-for-1 with one home run. The team also got some help courtesy of Leilani Fortanela, who scored a run and stole a base while getting on base in two of her three plate appearances.

Even though they lost, Aldine always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .600. That was just more of the same: they've now posted an OBP of .500 or higher in four consecutive contests.

Meanwhile, Nimitz was not able to break out of their rough patch on Thursday as the team picked up their eighth straight loss dating back to last season. They came up short against Huntsville, falling 16-1. That's two games in a row now that the Cougars have lost by exactly 15 runs.

Nimitz saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Josephine Bilbao, who scored a run and stole a base while going 1-for-2. Bilbao is also on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as she's now stole at least one in each of the last three games she's played.

Aldine's defeat dropped their record down to 1-9. As for Nimitz, their loss dropped their record down to 0-7.

Nimitz's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Aldine has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .535. It's a different story for Nimitz, though, as they've only averaged .342. Will they be able to contain Aldine's hitters?

Aldine might still be hurting after the 25-18 defeat they got from Nimitz when the teams last played back in April of 2024. Can Aldine avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
