Preview: Holy Cross Indians vs. Newport Wildcats

The Holy Cross Indians will look to defend their home field on Friday against the Newport Wildcats at 7:00 p.m.

There was early excitement for Holy Cross after they claimed the first score on Friday, but it was Ludlow who ended up claiming the real prize. Holy Cross was the victim of a tough 38-13 defeat at the hands of Ludlow. Holy Cross was down 31-7 at the end of the third quarter, and things only got worse from there.

Although Holy Cross took the loss, they still got scores from Devonte Ryan and Ulysses Porter.

Meanwhile, Newport can now show off four landslide victories after their most recent game on Friday. They breezed by Dayton on the road to the tune of 38-7. The win made it back-to-back wins for Newport.

Rod Thompson was a one-man wrecking crew for Newport as he rushed for 136 yards and a touchdown on only 13 carries, and also picked up 103 receiving yards and a touchdown. Kyle Lee was another key contributor, rushing for 32 yards and two touchdowns.

Ludlow's win bumped their season record to 5-3 while Holy Cross' loss dropped theirs to 5-4.

Here's a few offensive stats to keep an eye on ahead of Friday's contest: Holy Cross has been excellent on the ground this season, having averaged 172.8 rushing yards per game. It's a different story for Newport, though, as they've been averaging only 84.1 per game. How will Newport fare against such a dominant running game?

Holy Cross didn't have too much breathing room in their game against Newport when the teams last played back in October of 2022, but they still walked away with a 26-22 win. Will Holy Cross repeat their success, or does Newport have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
