Baseball Game Preview: Regents Lions vs. Timberlake Christian Tornadoes

The Regents Lions will face off against the Timberlake Christian Tornadoes at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. Regents is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 11.5 runs per game this season.

Regents took a six-run defeat the last time they faced off against Grace Christian, but this time they managed to keep it close and that made all the difference. The Lions skirted past the Warriors 5-4. The five-run effort marked the Lions' lowest-scoring contest of the season, but in the end it didn't matter.

Peter Mierzejewski was a major factor while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he tossed three innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off four hits. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than one walk in three consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, scoring a run and stealing two bases while going 1-for-2. He is becoming a predictor of Regents' success: when he posts at least two stolen bases the team is undefeated (and 1-2 when he doesn't).

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Paul Duval, who scored two runs and stole a base while going 3-for-4. Those three hits gave him a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Joseph Porter, who scored a run and stole a base while going 1-for-3.

Meanwhile, Timberlake Christian was not able to break out of their rough patch on Tuesday as the team picked up their ninth straight loss dating back to last season. They lost 25-1 to Smith Mountain Lake Christian Academy.

The win made it two in a row for Regents and bumps their season record up to 4-2. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered a grand total of 7 runs in those games. As for Timberlake Christian, their defeat dropped their record down to 0-6.

The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Friday as neither team is afraid to steal. Regents has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 6.3 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Timberlake Christian struggles in that department as they've been averaging 4.3 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
