Softball Recap: Chinle Turns Things Around After Road Loss

There's no place like home for Chinle, who bounced back after a loss on the road last Saturday. They narrowly escaped with a victory as the team sidled past the Monument Valley Mustangs 7-6. That result was just more of the same for these two, as the Wildcats also won the last time the pair played back in April of 2024.

Charmayne Charley spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered six earned runs on eight hits and racked up 13 Ks. What's more, she gave up only five walks, the fewest she's had since back in March of 2024.

On the hitting side, Bethany Jones and Emerleen Begay did most of the damage at the plate: Jones scored a run and stole five bases while going 2-for-4, while Begay scored a run and stole four bases while getting on base in all three of her plate appearances. That's the most hits Jones has posted since back in April of 2024. Another player making a difference was Camille Draper, who scored two runs and stole two bases while going 1-for-2.

Chinle always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .586. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Monument Valley only posted an OBP of .290.

Chinle's first win this season bumped their record up to 1-3. As for Monument Valley, their defeat dropped their record down to 1-1.

Chinle has already played their next match, a 5-4 victory against Window Rock on the 12th. As for Monument Valley, they also didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next game, a 14-2 loss against Page on the 12th.
