Whitney Young extended their winning streak to three on Thursday, bumping their season record up to 5-4-1 in the process. They blew past the Niles West Wolves 17-9. The Dolphins' hitters stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most runs they've scored all season.
Claire Swanborn made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits over four innings pitched. Swanborn was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-2 with one run, one double, and one RBI.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Natalie Nieves, who went 4-for-5 with five RBI, three runs, and two doubles. That's the most doubles she has posted since back in April of 2024. Another player making a difference was Priya Vaishnav, who got on base in all four of her plate appearances with two runs and one stolen base.
Whitney Young kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 17 hits. That's a new trend for them: they were averaging 2.6 hits per game earlier this season, but in their last 15 games they've averaged 13.
As for Niles West, they have been struggling recently as they've lost four of their last five matches. That's put a noticeable dent in their 2-5 record this season. They just can't catch a break and have now endured three losses in a row.
On Niles West's side, Penny Hutchison made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and went 2-for-4 with one home run, two RBI, and one double. That home run marked the first that Hutchison has launched this season. The team also got some help courtesy of Cheyenne Alameda, who went 2-for-3 with one run, one double, and one RBI.
Whitney Young didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next contest, an 8-2 win against Evanston on the 11th. As for Niles West, they have also already played their next game, a 10-2 defeat against Hersey on the 12th.
